How Many Supplies?

I'm currently planning on having enough supplies around to feed the family for 3-4 months. Enough to get through a sparse winter here in PA if necessary.

Do you think that a food crisis would likely last much longer than that? I think that at some point the government would take emergency measures and start nationalizing food and rationing it out. Besides, I'm not sure we could fend off the neighbors for more than a few weeks if we were eating and they were not.

The real threat as I see it is that food would just get very expensive as the dollar weakens.

Ummm yeah a food crisis could and will last longer than 3-4 months. Try years. History has shown this over and over.

Try to double it. And most importantly, add lots of heirloom/non-hybrid seeds to your stash - put them in the freezer to keep them safe.

If you are in a city where you can't grow food, then you need to leave the city, NOW. I don't care how - do it, do whatever it takes. Abandon whatever you think you have, and relocate. Because if you live in a city, you can have ten years of food - and you will die just the same when the hordes overrun your position.

The seeds were a good idea.

I suppose it will not hurt to get a few more months worth of food. With the dollar crashing it is a good investment anyway. I go more for traditional canned foods than the Superpails or MREs. They will last a few years in storage if they have to.

I am in a nice suburb and have about an acre. About a quarter acre could be planted id we needed to, and we also have berry bushes and fruit trees that I put in a long time ago. The non hybrid seeds were a good idea, I just ordered some tonight. Thanks.

There is no such thing as enough right now.
Build the stash quietly, and when the time comes, be sure to bitch loudly in public about how hungry you are, stand in the bread lines with everybody else, maybe even make an appearance at a food riot or two (don't get involved tho).
And if you have some fat on your bones, it would not be a bad idea to lean down like everybody else.
Nobody will ever repel a hungry mob, no matter how many guns you have, secrecy is key.
